Kids Sewing School 1st-4th Grade

This beginner-friendly class is perfect for students in 1st–4th grade! Young sewists will build foundational skills like machine threading and sewing technique—while working on fun, age-appropriate projects. Students learn at their own pace, and while they won’t complete a project each week, they will finish meaningful items over each 4-week session.

Session Projects:

• Aug–Sept: Zippered pencil case + simple A-line dress

• Sept–Oct: Tote bag + skirt

• Oct–Nov: Apron + drawstring backpack

• Nov–Dec: PJ pants + simple plushie

Fees & Registration:

• Cost: $150 per 4-week session

• Includes: All fabric and patterns

• Not included: Notions (selected and purchased in class), or any personal tools brought from home

• Payment is due in full to reserve your child’s spot. First-come, first-served.

Skills Taught:

• Machine threading and setup (with support)

• Guided sewing of straight seams

• Sewing safety and responsibility with tools

• Picking fabric and understanding pattern pieces

• Basic pinning and pressing techniques (age-appropriate)

Note: Students will not cut out their own fabric at this level, but that may change with experience or future sessions. Students over age 9 may use the iron unless otherwise requested by a parent.

What to Bring:

• All fabric and patterns are provided.

• Students may bring their own sewing tools (like a pincushion or scissors) must be purchased at Five Eighth Seams, but they are responsible for keeping track of them. Lost items will not be replaced.

Sewing Machines:

We recommend students use classroom machines to ensure consistent instruction. If you’d like your child to bring their own machine, it must be approved in advance by the instructor, and your child must be confident using it. There is no discount for using a personal machine.

Prerequisites:

There are no formal prerequisites, but we highly recommend starting with our Kids Just the Basics class if your child has never used a sewing machine before. This helps them get the most out of their sewing journey!
